Ohio woman too intoxicated to pick up boyfriend after OVI arrest

A 29-year-old woman in Plain Township ignored a law enforcement officer's advice to stay off the road after the sergeant detected her intoxication over the telephone. The sergeant had called her to come pick up her 23-year-old boyfriend, who had earlier been arrested for OVI after a traffic stop on Overhill Avenue. He had allegedly been speeding at 42 mph in 25 mph zone.

According to the sheriff's office report, his girlfriend insisted that she had not been drinking even though the sergeant thought she sounded drunk on the telephone. When she arrived at the Stark County Sheriff's Office, the sergeant detected the smell of alcohol on her. The sergeant also described her as glassy eyed and having difficulty walking.

The sergeant initiated a field sobriety test, but she allegedly said that she was too drunk to try and should be arrested. The sergeant followed her suggestion and arrested her. Authorities reported that her breath test indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.162. Deputies found two children, ages 5 and 9, in her car in the parking lot. Authorities added two counts of child endangerment to her OVI charges.

When a person faces criminal charges, such as drunk driving, an attorney could provide guidance as the client navigates the criminal justice system. An attorney might negotiate with the prosecutor and ask for a lenient sentence if the defendant agrees to attend an alcohol education program. This effort might allow an individual to avoid jail time and pay a lower fine.
